Santa Cruz Offers Great Opportunities for Doggy Fun
Hairy concert-goers trot around in outlandish costumes, their unfocused eyes flitting from Frisbee game to Frisbee game. The air is a tapestry woven of distant music, sweat and so much free love that anyone there stands the risk of a spontaneous face-licking.
This is Woofstock West, this year's theme for the annual Spring Dog Festival held just outside Santa Cruz, CA. Coastal Dog Owners Group holds the festival each year at Soquel High School to benefit area shelter animals. It usually includes skill and talent competitions, costume competitions and information about dog exercise and adoption.
There are demonstrations by groups like Disc Dogs of the Golden Gate, as well as herding, agility, lure coursing and dog dancing demos. There are also contests for weenie bobbing, best kisser, bulldog and pug beauty contests, a dachshund race and the coveted Best in Show.
Owners are encouraged to take what they learned about doggy exercise and lifestyles and apply it at any of Santa Cruz's off-leash areas like Mitchell Cove Beach.
