Savannah's Restaurants Are Sure to Satisfy
Savannah casts its Southern spell on its many restaurants, bringing forth a little history along with a pinch of Paula Deen's classic comfort.
Byrd Cookie Company began as a one-man operation started by Ben T. Byrd in Savannah back in 1924. From its humble beginnings, the company has since grown into an award-winning provider of high-quality gourmet cookies, biscuits, condiments and gift items sold around the world. Their award-winning Key Lime Coolers have long been a crowd favorite along with their crisp benne wafers. Food Nework's Paula Deen has a special section on the company's website, featuring sauce collections and Paula's First Cookbook Kit. The company also operates a 2,400-square-foot retail shop and showplace in Savannah.
Speaking of Paula Deen, she and her two sons own and operate a restaurant in Savannah, aptly named Lady and Sons. The restaurant grew out of Paula's lunch delivery service which began in 1989, when she operated under the moniker of The Bag Lady and dispatched her two sons to deliver the lunches. The business eventually grew into a restaurant, which eventually grew out of its space and moved to downtown Savannah, where Paula's sons joined in her restaurant venture. The menu features classic Souther dishes like chicken pot pie and shrimp and grits, as well as a buffet.
Get a taste of Savannah's rich history at 17Hundred90, named for the year it was constructed. The restaurant is housed in an inn, the only inn in Savannah with a full-service restaurant and lounge. The restaurant has been called “the most elegant restaurant in Savannah” by Gourmet Magazine, and its menu features a mix of fresh seafood and savory chicken or steak.
For a more upbeat atmosphere, be sure to stop underground at Jazz'd Tapas Bar, where the food and the fun have made this downtown hot spot a Savannah favorite. Featuring live performances Wednesdays-Sundays and an atmosphere that's described as “swank, sexy, and sophisticated,” this is one Savannah spot that certainly warrants a stop.
