The natural beauty of Arizona’s Valley of the Sun invites the Scottsdale community to admire the desert landscape. Scottsdale’s warm climate makes it easy to relax outdoors, and the city is famous for its golf and variety of courses and clubs. The nearby desert also provides visitors and residents with opportunities for hiking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities.

Golf

Scottsdale is home to more than 200 golf courses, as well as the Phoenix Open golf tournament. Desert golf clubs such as Troon North Golf Club offer a unique Southwestern golfing experience. One of the most popular public clubs is the McCormick Ranch Golf Club, located in the city center, with the excellent course conditions necessary to accommodate more than 600 players each day.

Outdoor Activities

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is one of the best locations in Scottsdale for desert hiking. The preserve stretches more than 17,000 acres of the Sonoran Desert and McDowell Mountains with more than 60 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, biking and bird-watching. Another popular hiking spot, Camelback Mountain, attracts thousands of hikers each year with trails available for every skill level.

Dog Parks

In addition to the many outdoor activities humans are invited to enjoy, the city also caters to the canines with a selection of dog parks. The most famous of these parks is Chaparral Park, just 10 minutes northeast of downtown. Open in the summer from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Chaparral Park rotates between three different sections, allowing for continuous upkeep. Of the two sections usually open, one is designated for passive dogs and the other for active dogs.
