Strawn's Eat Shop

Shreveport's specialties range from sweet to unique.

If you're looking for something sweet, try Strawn's Eat Shop, famous for its delicious strawberry pie. Strawn's has been in business since 1944, and has spawned two spinoffs, Strawn's Eat Shop Too and Strawn's Eat Shop Also. All three are decorated with colorful murals to give the atmosphere a signature Strawn's spin, and the menu includes comfort food classics like fried chicken, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. The restaurant was featured in the November 2009 issue of Southern Living magazine as one of the top diners in the south.

The Market Restaurant keeps things fresh by changing their menu on a weekly basis. The lounge atmosphere makes the restaurant a perfect place to relax and enjoy their weekly offerings. The menu items include a majority of seafood, usually with a cut of filet and a chicken option as well.

Settled in an old Victorian House is the Mabry House. Its unique setting says a lot about the restaurant, and guests can expect an evening of elegance when they enter the House. Though more expensive than some, the restaurants impressive menu and reputation for delectable cuisine make up for it, and make the Mabry House the ideal spot for a special occasion in Shreveport.

For a slightly different history lesson, try the Blind Tiger, set up in Shreveport's oldest documented building. During the Prohibition era, the name “blind tiger” was given to illegal bars and saloons, and the restaurant later adopted the title. The atmosphere is all about fun, with pool tables set up and karaoke on Sunday and Wednesday nights. The menu is filled with classic favorites, from southern fried seafood to cajun creations.

Another Shreveport hot spot is Bella Fresca, an “upscale restaurant [with an] unpretentious atmosphere.” The restaurant insists that it serves no set style or type of food; rather, they simply cook good food to share with guests. Bella Fresca also takes pride in its extensive wine list, which has been awarded an Award of Excellence by both Wine Spectator Magazine and Wine Enthusiast Magazine 7 years in a row. Each entree on the menu is designed with a complimentary wine from the wine list.
