As the seat of Johnston County, Smithfield heads one of the fastest-growing areas in the state. Its close proximity to the Raleigh-Durham area makes a city trip within easy reach, and Smithfield's own Main Street provides plenty of small-town charm. It's the birthplace of the late Ava Gardner, and her house-turned-museum adds a little Hollywood intrigue to the unassuming city.
