As the seat of Johnston County, Smithfield heads one of the fastest-growing areas in the state. Its close proximity to the Raleigh-Durham area makes a city trip within easy reach, and its own Main Street provides plenty of small-town charm. The city was also the birthplace of the late Ava Gardner, and a museum and yearly festival honor her.
