Did you know that more than 30,000 people work for Memphis-based FedEx? That’s equivalent to the population of many U.S. cities. Here are some more facts about The Bluff City that you might not know:

Big Pond, Big Fish

The largest Bass Pro Shops in the world is in Memphis, at the Memphis Pyramid that formerly housed a sports arena and concert venue. Bass Pro Shops Memphis has a huge retail store along with an observation deck, restaurants and an aquarium, and it even features a bowling alley and hotel.

HQ for HQs

There are 317 headquarter companies employing 87,500 people in the Memphis metro area. That includes 60 of the Fortune 500 companies and 216 of the Fortune 1000.

Standing Ovation

Many famed musicians got their start in Memphis during the 1950s and 1960s. Among the well known are Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Al Green and Percy Sledge.

In the Navy

The Memphis metro area houses a navy base, located in Millington just north of Memphis. Naval Support Activity Mid-South serves as the U.S. Navy’s Human Resources Center of Excellence for the region, and more than 6,500 military, civilian and contract personnel work on the base.

100 Percent

William R. Moore College of Technology (Moore Tech) offers associate degrees and certificates in half a dozen hot-career subject areas related to advanced manufacturing, and today the college boasts a 100 percent high-paying job placement rate for students in applied technology, machining technology, maintenance technology and industrial electricity and plant maintenance.

Downtown Abounds

More and more millennials are moving into the downtown Memphis district to live and work. Besides excellent job opportunities, the downtown district has “a Memphis vibe” and gives employees access to multiple recreation options, top restaurants, specialty shops and after-hours entertainment venues.

Tiger Talent

University of Memphis has developed an excellent central resource called Tiger Talent that is ideal for students seeking employment, and employers looking for talent. It’s a one-stop shop that lets companies reach out to students, whether it’s for an internship, part-time employment or hiring students full time after graduation.

Open ‘Til 11

Memphis has a tremendous advantage for any company looking to export or import, thanks to Federal Express. The company’s location at Memphis International Airport allows local companies to get packages to the FedEx site until 10 or 11 p.m., whereas most businesses in the U.S. have to cut off shipments at 5 or 6 p.m.

Whew, Those Student Loans

Student loan debt is a huge issue for many who attended college, but the local Memphis government has started helping their employees a bit. The city government began in July 2017 to pay eligible employees $50 every month to help repay student loans.
