The majority of residents in Charlotte, NC, share a sense of optimism that their health and lives will improve, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. That's the kind of positive environment resolution makers need to achieve their goals.

"This accounts for the distinct geographic, climactic, natural, social and human characteristics that shape the soul of any area. If the place aligns with your most valued criteria, you'll probably thrive."

Charlotte was the only southern city to appear on Forbes.com's list of the Top Cities for Volunteering. More than 34 percent of residents here do volunteer work on an annual basis. It also has a well educated population. Nearly 40 percent of people 25 and over have a bachelor's degree or higher. The University of North Carolina-Charlotte is located here, as well as 18 other colleges, opening the door to those who are looking to go back to school or study a new subject.

Charlotte has a low cost of living, which helps residents save money. Speaking of saving money, Charlotte is home to several bank headquarters including Bank of America.

Golf is a favorite sport here and is played year round thanks to warm weather. Charlotte is home of the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the U.S. National Whitewater Center on the Catawba River. Residents can find an abundance of fun things to do in the area, which also offers trails, museums and more in cultural activities.
