In Wyoming the hills, as well as the plains, are alive with the sound of music.

A range of music festivals across the state appeals to music lovers of all stripes with family-oriented fun.

The Beartrap Summer Festival got its start 20 years ago as a local event. Today, it’s grown into a family-focused weekend that draws top names from the bluegrass and country music genres. Nestled in Beartrap Meadow Park atop Casper Mountain, the festival also includes local food and craft vendors.

With camping nearby on Casper Mountain, families make a weekend out of the event. It’s beginning to draw visitors from all over the state, says Jana Price, festival director. “We’re getting a lot of people to see our headline acts.”

Other events:

Oyster Ridge Music Festival, Kemmerer: This free festival held in Kemmerer’s Triangle Park draws pickers of all instruments, including guitars, mandolins, banjos and fiddles for a celebration of homegrown talent. There’s even a chance for the audience to jam with their own instruments.

Targhee Bluegrass Festival, Alta: For more than 25 years the Grand Targhee Resort has hosted top bluegrass acts and fun for the family with a Kids Fun Zone. The stage is set at the bottom of two ski lifts for a spectacular view of the mountain.

Wyoming State BBQ Championship and Bluegrass Festival, Worland: Bring your appetite for barbecue and a good time at the annual festival in the Big Horn Basin between Casper and Billings, Mont.

Nowoodstock, Ten Sleep: The annual three-day Music Festival takes place next in Vista Park next to the Nowood River and offers the opportunity to experience new music.

Big Horn Mountain Festival, Buffalo: The 10th annual festival celebrating acoustic, bluegrass, Americana, roots and folk music will be held July 11, 12 and 13, 2014, at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. Events include including the Wyoming Mandolin and Banjo Championships, an old-time fiddle contest and a guitar competition.
