Natchez-Adams County, MS Public and Private Schools

By Teree Caruthers on August 12, 2014

Natchez-Adams County parents have several choices for their students’ education. From private and parochial schools to a public magnet program focusing on a S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum, the county’s schools strive to keep students ahead of the academic curve.

Public Schools

Natchez-Adams County Schools give students educational advantages with programs such as the Natchez Freshman Academy, which helps ninth-graders to more easily transition from middle school to high school through individualized instruction. Select sixth-graders can attend the Robert Lewis Magnet School, which offers small class sizes, project-based learning and a focus on S.T.E.M.  academic disciplines. The academy and magnet school are two of eight schools operated by the school district, including three elementary schools, a middle school, Natchez High School and the Fallin Career and Tech Center, which provides students with work-ready skills in automotive service technology, health sciences and digital media technology.

Private Schools

Adams County parents have several choices for their students’ private education. Trinity Episcopal Day School offers instruction for pre-kindergarten through high school students, and encourages programs such as studying abroad and community service activities. The school, which traces its roots back to the late 1800s when it housed the city’s first kindergarten, offers scholarships to qualified applicants. Adams County Christian School also offers a curriculum for pre-K through high school. Some of the school’s benefits include dual college-high school enrollment, allowing ACCS high school students to earn college credit, and teams in all major sports, including golf and tennis. Cathedral School  and Holy Family Early Learning Center offer their respective students a traditional Catholic education with programs and activities designed to foster spiritual growth.

Aiming Higher

High school graduates pursuing a four-year or graduate degree needn’t look far. Alcorn State University in nearby Lorman combines more than 140 years of tradition and academic excellence with innovation and research. The university’s School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied Sciences, a leader in advanced technologies and agricultural sciences, offers specialized degrees, such as electrical and geospatial engineering, agricultural economics and agribusiness management. The Alcorn State University-Natchez campus houses the ASU Graduate School of Business MBA and Executive MBA programs as well as the School of Nursing. The nursing school confers associate, bachelor’s and graduate degrees.

One Very Big Book Club

Move over, Oprah. A new book club is in town. As part of the One Book, One Community reading program, all students in the Natchez-Adams County Schools district as well as students in the city’s private and parochial schools will be reading the same three books. The program hopes to not only encourage more students to read and discuss what they’ve read with each other, but also to engage the entire community in the effort to provide the county’s kids with an even better education. The school system kicked off the program in summer 2014 with the book I Beat the Odds: From Homelessness to the Blind Side and Beyond which inspired the movie The Blind Side. Organizers planned an outdoor showing of the film and roundtable discussions of the book for the community.
