Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Traverse City is one of Michigan's most scenic locations. The area offers spectacular views of Lake Michigan from atop numerous dunes and beach trails. Adventurous visitors to the lakeshore will want to try to master the challenging and steep Dune Climb. The Climb is the main attraction for youngsters who wear themselves out running up and rolling down the dunes. It's a great place for people watching and picnicking too.

Philip A. Hart Visitor Center

in the Sleeping Bear area houses exhibits and dioramas focused on the history and geology of the lakeshore area. Named for the Michigan senator whose work helped to establish the Sleeping Bear area, the visitor center is staffed with knowledgeable guides to answer questions and is open daily.  The

Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum

is another favorite for visitors as they get to explore exhibits from rescue workers at Lake Michigan and learn about their important role in the history of the area.
