McAllen Medical Center
The largest full-service hospital in the South Texas region, McAllen Medical Center (MMC) includes a designated Advanced Level III Trauma Center. With 441 beds and more than 600 physicians representing over 50 specialties, MMC is also home to a pediatric unit, a dedicated oncology unit and a family-focused birthing center with an advanced Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Founded in 1919, MMC emphasizes neurological and orthopedic care, as evidenced by the hospital’s certification as a Primary Stroke Center, the only one in Hidalgo County, and a Bone and Joint Center of Excellence. McAllen Heart Hospital
Committed to meeting patients’ heart-related medical needs, McAllen Heart Hospital (MHH) was the first freestanding cardiology and cardiovascular hospital built in the United States. Since its founding in 1996, MHH has been the region’s leader for cardiovascular care. McAllen Heart specializes in diagnosis and treatment, emergency heart care, heart catheterization, heart surgery and education.
The 60-bed hospital also offers a 24-hour emergency center, a designated Level IV Trauma Center. MHH has cardiac catheterization labs and open-heart operating suites, and is nationally recognized as a leader in excellence, technology, quality and service capabilities. MHH offers the Upper Rio Grande Valley’s only Accredited Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCI), and is a Certified Primary Stroke Center. Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
Founded by eight doctors in 1997, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (DHR) is dedicated to setting a standard of excellence in patient care. The 530-bed health system provides a full range of services that include 70 specialties and sub-specialties. DHR operates one of Hidalgo County’s largest emergency rooms, with 24 ER beds and 24/7 access to on-site physicians and on-call specialists. DHR was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the “Best Hospitals in America” for 2015-2016, and has repeatedly been named one of Thomson Reuters’ “Top 100 Hospitals in the U.S.”
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance has 3,900 employees, more than 650 physicians and 1,200 nurses on its medical staff, and treats more than 285,000 patients annually. The hospital is working with the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio to establish a Phase II cancer-research program. DHR formed the Diabetes & Obesity Prevention Institute of South Texas, a non-profit medical institute geared to reducing the prevalence of diabetes and obesity—the largest contributing cost factors to health care in the region.

A 320-bed facility with some 1,100 medical professionals, including more than 500 physicians representing 35 specialties, Rio Grande Regional Hospital (RGRH) serves the Rio Grande Valley with a full range of medical care. Services include a 24-hour ER, Level III Trauma Center, comprehensive cardiac care, the Valley’s only pediatric-heart program, a 30-bed neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU) with 24/7 in-house neonatal coverage, and more.
RGRH also is home to the Accredited Diabetes Management Center, as designated by the American Diabetes Association. Since 2007, the hospital has been named a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
