#84. Reno, NV

There’s no denying it: Reno is on the rise. This western Nevada city near Lake Tahoe with a population of 250,000 people is often mentioned alongside its sister city, Sparks. The region is thriving — adding thousands of new jobs every year — as more and more tech companies build data centers and manufacturing facilities here because of its low cost of living (especially when compared to the Bay Area). Families love living here since there are tons of things to do, commute times are low and the seasons are mild (it’s sunny here 300 days out of the year!).

Top Industries and Employers: Healthcare, education, tech, advanced manufacturing and clean energy are top industries in Reno.

Best Coffee Shop: Hub Coffee Roasters, which has several locations around town, including one that’s in a bike shop.

Best Local Beer/Brewery: Pigeon Head Brewery, which specializes in lagers and ales like the red rye lager or the India pale lager with jalapeño and habanero peppers.

Must-Have Meal: The eggs benedict served atop veggie fritters at Two Chicks, a favorite Reno brunch destination.

Best Co-Working Space: Reno Collective, a community hub with classes in everything from WordPress to 3D printing.

Best Meetup Spot (When Meeting Up Is a Thing Again): The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery, so that everyone in your work happy hour group can get exactly what they want inside this 104-year-old repurposed train depot.

Creative Hub: The Nevada Museum of Art is anything but stuffy. In addition to exhibits, you’ll also find hands-on classes, workshops, lectures, film-screenings and more.

Favorite Weekend Activity: In the winter, weekends are packed with skiing and snowboarding at regional resorts. In the summer, mountain biking or leisure cycling are on the agenda, followed by drinks on the patio at The Brewer’s Cabinet or another relaxing spot.

Free Way to Have Fun: Take advantage of all the free festivals and events Reno has to offer, like watching freestyle and competitive whitewater kayaking at the Reno River Festival or checking out tons of shows, exhibits and other performances at the annual Artown festival held each July.

Local Dream Job: Golf pro at one of the many beautiful golf courses in the region so you can spend the day outdoors enjoying Reno’s picturesque weather.
