Rowlett Meets Residents’ Health Care Needs, From Birth Through Retirement
Medical, fitness, residential sectors effectively serve all generations
Rowlett offers residents a wide range of health care and wellness options that begin at birth and continue throughout their lives.
Senior Care
At the heart of Rowlett’s senior care services is the Rowlett Community Center, which offers robust senior programming – planned activities, exercise classes, social activities and organized events for seniors, allowing them to form meaningful relationships with other seniors in the community.
Rowlett also is able to offer seniors access to high-quality health care close to home at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center and other health care centers in the greater Dallas metro area, such as Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation at Rowlett, M3 Health Services in Garland, and Rehab Management Physical & Aquatic Therapy.
“We are a very health care focused city. It is one of our primary industries, and so there is a lot of access to health care in our city,†says Rowlett Mayor Tammy Dana-Bashian.
Dana-Bashian says another area in which the city excels is residential offerings for seniors.
“One of the goals of Rowlett is that we make sure we have housing for all ages, so that our community can age in place, if that is their desire,†she says. “So, we started a focus in 2011, with the passing of our comprehensive plans, that we would find ways to ensure that we had housing available for all ages.â€
The city’s plan resulted in the first independent senior living facility, Evergreen at Rowlett. The city recently approved a second independent senior living facility.
“Once that is built, we will have a second affordable, senior independent living option for the residents of Rowlett, and that is very important to us,†the mayor says. “In addition to those two independent facilities, we do have quite a few assisted living facilities and memory care facilities and nursing homes that can help those who can no longer live independently.â€
Some of these places include Brookdale Summer Ridge A. L., Christian Care Centers, Iris Memory Care, The Oaks at Liberty Grove, Lexington Medical Lodge, Abba Care Assisted Living, Arbor House of Rockwall, Silver Creek Assisted Living and Mercer Place Assisted Living.
Rowlett also has a senior advisory board, which focuses on providing information to the senior population, including periodic, monthly seminars on topics of interest to seniors. SCOR, Senior Citizens of Rowlett, guides seniors toward helpful resources and offers educational programs.
Perhaps the most important resource for seniors is the city’s transportation system. DART light rail and DART On-Call are essential to senior mobility. DART On-Call will pick seniors up at their homes and take them to the Community Centre or to run errands or to medical appointments. In addition, the city-funded Star Transit service is available to transport seniors from their homes to either the Rowlett Community Centre or public library.
“That was really important to our community, to make sure our seniors had the ability to get to our programs that we offer for our seniors,†Dana-Bashian says.
Major Medical
Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Lake Pointe is a 112-bed acute-care hospital, offering a wide range of medical specialties and services, including a Fast-Track Emergency Department, intensive care unit, women’s services, Level II and Level III NICU, interventional cardiology, diagnostic imaging, robotic-assisted surgery, orthopedics, vascular surgery, neurosurgery and urology. The hospital is also designated a Level III Trauma center. The anchor facility of Baylor Scott & White Health, the Medical Center serves the Rowlett, Rockwall, Wylie, Forney, Greenville and surrounding communities. Baylor, Scott & White Health also operates facilities in Frisco, Dallas, Sunnyvale and Garland, providing residents with a regional network of physicians and specialty services.
Among the health system’s services in Rowlett are the Baylor Scott & White Cancer Center, the Baylor Scott & White Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, the Baylor Scott & White Breast Center, the Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation, the Baylor Scott & White Sleep Center, and the Baylor Scott & White Wound Care Center. The Lake Pointe facility also emphasizes health care education, offering courses and activities for the community such as a breast cancer support group, a diabetes support group, the Living Well with Cancer educational seminar, and childbirth and parenting classes for new moms and dads.
To accommodate the growth of Rockwall, Collin and Dallas counties, Baylor Scott & White is undergoing major construction that will enhance patient care. A new three-floor patient tower, for example, will allow the NICU, well-baby nursery and postpartum department to be housed on the same floor. The new building will also feature two 16-bed medical and surgical units as well as new patient registration areas, a new, expansive lobby and a renovated kitchen and dining area.
