Staying active is easy in Temple, as the city is home to a variety of parks, indoor and outdoor recreational facilities and golf courses.

Trails and Nature Areas

The Miller Springs Nature Area offers 260 acres for hiking, rock climbing, fishing, picnicking and other outdoor activities. This natural preserve is open to the public from dawn until dusk each day of the year.

Temple residents can also enjoy exercising on the Temple Trail System, which comprises 14 hiking and biking trails ranging in length from a quarter of a mile to just over two miles.

Those interested in spending time on - or in - the water can visit Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake, both of which offer fishing and boating opportunities.

Parks and Playgrounds

With a total of 42 parks scattered around the city, Temple successfully accommodates those interested in enjoying the outdoors. The larger parks, including Lions, Scott & White, West Temple and Wilson, offer playing fields, playgrounds, grills and pavilions.

Designed for children of all ages and abilities, the Temple Rotary South All Access Playground is Temple's first completely-accessible play area. The playground includes three interconnected decks, swings, a see-saw, an elevated sandbox and other features that all children may enjoy.

Indoor/Outdoor Facilities

Offering 23,600 square feet of fitness equipment, tennis courts, swimming pools, a rock climbing wall and other amenities, the Summit Family Fitness Center provides Temple residents an opportunity to enhance their wellness. The facility also offers group fitness classes, childcare, locker rooms, saunas and hot tubs.

The Wilson Park Recreation Center provides indoor and outdoor opportunities to children and adults, such as a gymnasium, fitness equipment, arts and crafts areas, classrooms and tennis and volleyball courts.

Sammons Park Indoor Pool is also open to the public and offers a variety of classes, such as Aqua Arthritis, Cardio Splash, Aqua Zumba and Water Aerobics. The pool may also be rented for parties.

Golf Courses

Open since 1934, Sammons Golf Links offers an 18-hole course and a newly-updated practice facility and clubhouse. With a lighted driving range, a chipping area and a 10,000 square foot putting green, Sammons is open from 7 a.m. until dusk.

Also an 18-hole course, the Wildflower Country Club features six lighted tennis courts, a swimming pool, dining rooms and a casual dining option, the Wildflower Grill.
