With a 1950s feel and a diverse menu that includes options from burgers and chili dogs to chicken salad and pimento cheese, Luke’s Café offers customers a great meal.

Abingdon and Washington County ‘s savory mix of must-visit eateries is rooted in classic American fare but seasoned with other ethnic and cultural influences.

JJ’s Restaurant & Sports Bar

JJ’s Restaurant & Sports Bar offers an eclectic menu ranging from surf (try the catfish, blackened for extra kick) to turf (or the special burger, with caramelized onions and pimento cheese).

“My favorite is the pulled-pork nachos – a wonderful combination of barbecue, pintos, cheese and chips,†says local resident Kim Farris-Luke.

Chef Heather’s Espresso Bar & Gourmet Cafe

A popular lunch spot, Chef Heather’s Espresso Bar & Gourmet Cafe is known for its fresh greens and ample portions. Regulars gush about the strawberry spinach salad with grilled chicken.

“My friends and I love Chef Heather’s,” says high school student Delaney Edwards. “The lunch combos are always delicious at a good price.”

The Peppermill

Tipping toward the upscale end, The Peppermill offers a warm setting in an historic home. Consider porch seating if weather permits. The menu spans salads, quesadillas, sandwiches, chicken, pork, steak and seafood.

“The food is amazing, service is excellent, and they serve good portions for the money,†says local resident Dawn Brooks, whose favorites include Angus rib-eye and filet mignon.

Luke’s Café

With a 1950s feel and a diverse menu that includes options from burgers and chili dogs to chicken salad and pimento cheese, Luke’s Café has its share of repeat customers.

“My family has a hard time settling on a restaurant, so Luke’s is a sure thing,†says local Christi Edwards. “Each item has ingredients that give it a twist and keep us coming back.”

Tip: Don’t miss out on the quiche if it is on the special-order menu when you visit.

128 Pecan

Locals gush about Jack’s 128 Pecan in downtown Abingdon for such savory options as tomato bisque, winter black bean soup, fish tacos and salmon with succotash. The restaurant, on Pecan Street, gives diners a cozy, casual atmosphere and simple, good food.

Mojo’s Trailside Café and Coffee

Known for its modern, health-conscious menu, which features gluten-free options and a wide array of gourmet coffee, Mojo’s Trailside Café and Coffee in Damascus,Va. has been consistently a local favorite with residents and tourists alike. Special highlights include delicious assortments of desserts and pastries, as well as breakfast and lunch served all day.
