Catch the nation’s longest-running melodrama and cheer the hero while booing the villain at a production of Gold in the Hills, presented annually since 1936. The play showcases the wilder side of city life in the infamous New York Bowery.

Quench your thirst for local history at Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum, a former candy store where Coke was first served in bottles in 1894. Vicksburg businessman Joseph Biedenharn thought of the bottling idea; Coke had previously been served only as a fountain drink.

PADDLE THE YAZOO

Leave from the landing at the foot of Clay Street in downtown Vicksburg and enjoy kayaking or canoeing along the Yazoo and Mississippi rivers, where you can fish and look for wildlife.

VISIT DOWNTOWN

Experience places like Children’s Art Park, The Corner Drug Store, Lower Mississippi River Museum and Interpretive Center, Old Court House Museum (with 10,000 artifacts), historic churches, stores, antique shops, restaurants, galleries and even dockside casinos during a day or evening excursion through historic downtown Vicksburg.

KEEP LEARNING

Adults and children can enroll in courses at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center, where the curriculum includes a free River Kids after-school art and music education program. The Center stages a variety of performances, lectures and exhibits for adults.

RUN AMOK

Participate in any of the three running events held annually in Vicksburg, namely the Over the River Run five-miler in October, the Run Thru History 10K race in March, or the Chill in the Hills 10K event each January.

HUNT FOR GHOSTS

Embrace scariness every October by experiencing the annual Haunted Vicksburg Ghost Tour, a 90-minute walking adventure organized by Principaltours LLC that takes participants to old churches, a Civil War cemetery, creepy houses and abandoned buildings along dark streets.
