Clear weather, gorgeous scenery, even flawless greens: The High Desert of Victor Valley is every golfer’s dream. Here's your guide for where to go to make the most of those advantages.

Green Tree Golf Course, Victorville

Green Tree Golf Course, one of Victorville’s two municipal courses, is an ideal place to enjoy that dynamite weather. Opened as a private club in 1953 and later deeded to the city, Green Tree is a par-72 championship course offering more than 6,600 yards of play. The facility also boasts a full pro shop, restaurant, banquet facilities and driving range. Green Tree is popular with both locals and visitors, thanks to low membership fees and an abundance of nearby hotels. The course is also noteworthy for its playability.

“Our tee boxes are level, our fairways are wide – it’s a very comfortable course for every kind of golfer,” says Bob Conrad, assistant director of community services for the city of Victorville. Green Tree’s landscaping is another standout feature. “Our greens are just pure, and they’re fun to putt on,” Conrad says. “Golfers that like a good round of golf love smooth greens, and that’s what we have.”

To keep the fairways lush in Victor Valley’s arid climate, the city of Victorville employs cutting-edge conservation methods.

“We’ve installed a new irrigation system that allows us to rejuvenate our aquifers as we use the water from them, and we’re doing a lot of desert landscaping outside the playing area,” Conrad says. The result is a course that complements its natural surroundings without sacrificing the parklike atmosphere that golfers love.

“It’s just a beautiful property with a lot of nice vistas,” Conrad says.

Hesperia Golf & Country Club, Hesperia

Another option is Hesperia Golf & Country Club, a Golf Digest 3.5-star course. Opened in 1957, the club has a rich history as a former PGA tour stop. Its list of legendary visitors includes Arnold Palmer and Sammy Snead, and California Golf Magazine ranked the course as one of the top 25 in the state. For golfers seeking a little flexibility, Victor Valley also has several courses with nine-hole options.

Ashwood Golf Course, Apple Valley and Tees & Trees Golf Course, Barstow

Ashwood Golf Course in Apple Valley allows players to choose between a full or half round. And Barstow’s Tees & Trees Golf Course offers nine holes of play. Whatever course you choose, Conrad sees golfing as an ideal way to experience Victor Valley’s natural beauty.

“If you’re a recreation person as far as enjoying nature, golf is one of the premiere sports you can do,” he says. “It’s relaxing, and you can’t beat the scenery.”
