Hiking, History and Sports Top the Recreation Lineup

If you’re looking for a place to play‚ Winchester and Clark County have plenty of options.

Sports and fitness enthusiasts‚ nature lovers‚ history buffs and cultural connoisseurs can all find something fun to do in this central Kentucky community.

The Daniel Boone National Forest – with highlights such as the Natural Arch Scenic Area and Red River Gorge – offer countless opportunities to enjoy the area’s breathtaking scenery‚ abundant wildlife and miles of hiking trails.

It’s one of the most heavily used forests in the South‚ with more than 5 million visitors flocking here each year to backpack‚ camp‚ picnic‚ rock climb‚ boat‚ fish and just relax.

The Lower Howard’s Creek Nature and Heritage Preserve is a protected wilderness area that offers rigorous guided hikes‚ including wildflower tours‚ a tour of limestone quarries and a tour of stone fences built during the 1800s. The preserve includes a narrow‚ forested gorge with cliffs‚ spectacular waterfalls and the ruins of a historic industrial settlement.

History buffs can also visit Fort Boonesborough State Park – site of Kentucky’s second settlement – to experience authentic pioneer life complete with living history demonstrations and costumed artisans. The Civil War Fort at Boonesborough opened in 2005‚ offering a half-mile‚ self-guided trail that teaches visitors about Civil War history and the general history of the area.

For a more leisurely look at days gone by‚ the Bluegrass Heritage Museum tells the story of the Kentucky Bluegrass Region through displays of artifacts and photographs from the American Indians to the present.

Shoppers can check out downtown Winchester‚ where historic buildings house contemporary shops and restau­rants. Leeds Center for the Arts‚ a restored Art Deco venue downtown‚ features theater performances and con­certs‚ as does the Winchester Opera House.

During the summer‚ the Clark County Fair in Winchester draws big crowds for a carnival‚ parade‚ livestock shows‚ a rodeo‚ tractor pulls‚ a horse show‚ live music and more – a week of community fun and friendly competition.

Throughout the year‚ the Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Department and the YMCA offer plenty of sports-related activities for people of all ages.

“We have volleyball leagues‚ basketball courts with open games and a youth basketball league‚” says Jim Snapp‚ recreation specialist at the Parks and Recreation Department.

Additional activities include line dancing and ballroom dancing‚ Pilates‚ karate and three 5K runs each year.

More than half the funding needed for a new community center has been raised‚ Snapp says‚ and plans are under way for an expansion that will include an aquatic center and child care facilities.

The YMCA focuses on activities for kids.

“Our biggest program is youth basket ball‚” says Director Bill Pace. “We have over 750 kids participating.” Youngsters can also play T-ball and flag football‚ do arts and crafts‚ learn to swim or take a swing at putt-putt golf. The YMCA hosts Fun Fridays and summer camp‚ and it recently received a grant to fund a chess club.
