Give yourself extra credit for knowing that Sweetwater County has many academic programs in place for preschoolers to senior citizens. Here are examples:

Higher Education

Western Wyoming Community College is the No. 7 ranked community college in America, as rated by the news and public-affairs publication Washington Monthly, which recognized WWCC for its 60 degree programs and 26 certificate offerings. The college is headquartered in Rock Springs and has outreach centers in communities such as Green River, Rawlins and Evanston, and it recently opened a Workforce Training Center to train workers in the region’s ever-growing oil, gas and mining industries.

The University of Wyoming in Laramie has outreach centers in both Rock Springs and Green River and offers 80 undergraduate and 90 graduate degree programs within its seven academic colleges. UW has all the amenities of a major university, plus students enjoy smaller class sizes with an average student-teacher ratio of 14-1.

Public Schools

Sweetwater County public schools feature two districts – Sweetwater County School District #1 and Sweetwater County School District #2. School District #1 has seven K-4 elementary schools, two grade 5-6 elementary schools, a junior high, high school and an alternative school all in Rock Springs. The district also includes Desert Elementary and Middle School in Wamsutter and a K-12 campus in the Farson-Eden community.

Sweetwater County School District #2 operates seven elementary schools (K-4), Monroe Intermediate School for grades five and six, Lincoln Middle School, Green River High School and Expedition Academy alternative school.

Private Schools

Parents in Sweetwater County may choose to enroll their children in private schools, like Holy Spirit Catholic School and Green River Christian Academy. Founded in 1951 under the direction of the Diocese of Cheyenne, Holy Spirit Catholic School erves pre-K through sixth-grade students. Green River Christian Academy, founded in 1995 by Green River Bible Baptist Church, teaches students in grades K-12.

Community Education

A variety of extracurricular and continuing education opportunities are available in Sweetwater County, including Boys & Girls Club after-school programs, which include homework help, fitness classes, a teen game room and computer center. The Sweetwater Board of Cooperative Educational Services at Western Wyoming Community College hosts a series of specialized summer camps for kids in such areas as geocaching, golf, astronomy and Chinese cooking, while Sweetwater County 4-H schedules several education camps, fairs and livestock auctions for both adults and younger people.

The Rock Springs and Green River chambers of commerce help give residents a global education through their International Travel Program, through which the chambers lead a group on an annual educational tour abroad. Previous trips were made to China, Costa Rica and Ireland.
