Calhoun Community College

Decatur’s only college, Calhoun Community College, is the largest of the almost 30 two-year schools in the Alabama Community College System. More than 11,000 students are enrolled in the school named after our seventh Vice President, John C. Calhoun.

Calhoun Community College gives students the opportunity to study in almost 50 associate degree programs and more than 50 certificate programs.

The Calhoun Community College’s Warhawks participates in baseball and softball as part of the Alabama Community College Conference.


A quick 30-minute drive takes Decatur residents to Huntsville for additional options for higher education.

University of Alabama – Huntsville has more than 30 majors in its colleges of Liberal Arts, Engineering, Business, Science and Nursing. Almost 8,000 students are enrolled in this public coeducational school.

Also in Huntsville, Alabama A&M University is a historically African American institution with more than 5,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled. More than 40 baccalaureate degrees are offered, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees.
