Congressman William B. Bankhead wanted to build a formidable mansion in north Jasper during the 1920s, and today the three-story Bankhead House and Heritage Center still stands.

The U.S. Representative who became Speaker of the House in 1936 occupied the colonial revival house during most of his life, hosting lavish parties as well as high-scale business meetings on the premises.

But perhaps even more famous than the Congressman was his daughter, actress Tallulah Bankhead, who spent several years at the mansion and was married in the stately home in 1937.

The mansion changed hands several times in subsequent years until it was finally purchased in 2008 by the Walker Area Community Foundation, its current owner. The Foundation has been restoring the structure by using original blueprint drawings, and Bankhead House and Heritage Center reopened to the public in early 2012. Upcoming plans are to use it for art and history exhibits, as well as community gatherings with a civic purpose, plus a permanent exhibit is being planned to showcase pieces from three Tallulah Bankhead collections.
