Prattville, AL

Prattville’s quality of life is no secret to residents of the River Region, who know that good schools, friendly neighbors and home-grown businesses are what makes a community special.

Picking up the Pace

Growth has expanded the city’s population by more than 20 percent in the past decade, to approximately 30,600, and new subdivisions have sprung up to accommodate the influx. Meanwhile, older neighborhoods have gained interest from those seeking distinctive historic homes as well as budget-minded do-it-yourselfers.

Long considered a bedroom community of Montgomery, 20 miles away, new employment opportunities are cropping up to allow Prattville residents to work closer to home. Value is another important factor driving the Prattville housing market. The average price of a home in Prattville is $150,000, some $30,000 below the national average.

Historic Hunt’s Alley

Like many cities across America, transportation costs and the convenience of living near work and shopping has created a demand for downtown living options. In Prattville, a wave of new residents in older parts of town has been evident for the past several years.

Downtown revitalization has kindled interest in Hunt’s Alley, a neighborhood of century-old mill houses between Prattville City Hall and the Autauga County Courthouse. The original shotgun-style houses were small homes built for workers at a nearby mill. Today, those houses are being refurbished and empty lots are filling up with new homes for singles, couples and empty-nesters.

Putting Down Roots

East of downtown, the Memorial Drive/Fairview/McQueenSmith Road area has really taken off. These well-established neighborhoods contain various styles of homes, most built between 1940 and 1965. The area is especially popular with families, and home buyers tend to be professionals with higher-than-average educational levels.

Breaking New Ground

With a growing demand for housing, developers have continued investing in new residential construction. The Home Place development along Cobbs Cord Road is a mixed-use community combining businesses, single family homes and, most recently, apartments. The apartment complex, known as The Park at Home Place, will have 414 apartments with jogging trails and other amenities on site.

New developments underway in Prattville include Highland Ridge, near the Robert Trent Jones golf complex, and Mountain Lake, near Prattville Country Club.
