With a world-class university and an excellent educational system, a good mix of longstanding employers and innovative startups, and a renowned medical center serving all of Northwest Arkansas, it's no wonder Fayetteville is considered one of the country's best places for businesses and careers.

Economic drivers can be found in all corners of the city, from the University of Arkansas to Tyson's to Washington Regional Medical Center. Here are some of the area's key employers.

University of Arkansas

More than 21,000 students from around 100 countries are enrolled each year at the state's flagship university, which was founded in 1871. Featuring nearly 200 academic programs, top-notch facilities and an impressive array of research efforts, the University of Arkansas is Fayetteville's largest employer.

Wal-Mart Optical Lab

Fayetteville is one of three locations in the country for optical laboratories operated by Wal-Mart, with the others in Dallas and in Crawfordsville, Ind. These labs provide eye care for more than 6 million patients each year at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club's optical centers. They offer access to eye care professionals as well as complete eye wear and contact lens.

Tyson's of Fayetteville

The Tyson Foods plant in Fayetteville has been processing Mexican Original tortillas since 1983, and it experienced a significant expansion in 2012 with the addition of two production lines and some 60 new employees. As one of Tyson Foods' three dedicated tortilla operations, Mexican Original is the country's second-largest manufacturer of tortillas, which are sold to foodservice and restaurant customers. The Fayetteville location, which also manufactures Tyson frozen foods, has around 560 employees.

J.B. Hunt

Founded in 1961, J.B. Hunt Transport Services is one of North America's largest transportation logistics companies. It provides safe and reliable transportation services to a diverse group of customers throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, according to the company's website. It transports full truckload freight, and has arrangements with most of the major North American rail carriers for movement of freight.

Washington Regional Medical Center

Serving residents from Washington, Benton, Madison and Carroll counties, Washington Regional Medical Center is the only not-for-profit, community-owned healthcare system in Northwest Arkansas. It's an acute care and rehabilitation hospital with an assisted living facility, kidney dialysis centers, an outpatient surgery center, and a network of clinics and services.

Superior Industries International

Fayetteville is home to one of five manufacturing plants owned by Superior Industries International, headquartered in Van Nuys, Calif. With a total of around 3,300 employees, Superior produces aluminum wheels for the major vehicle platforms of the world's leading automobile and light truck manufacturers.
