#10. Benton

Even Arkansas native Bill Clinton, a Democrat, had a hard time finding support in conservative Benton, Ark. Clinton won the popular vote here in 1996 by an 8 percent margin. Since then, voters in Benton and surrounding Saline County have backed Republican presidential candidates. Most Benton residents identify themselves as conservative, although voters in the larger 2nd Congressional District have supported several Democratic representatives.

The district’s current representative, Tim Griffin, is a Republican who leans far to the right on most social and financial issues, according to GovTrack. Griffin recently applauded the Supreme Court decision that profit-seeking businesses can hold religious views under federal law. He has received awards from both the American Conservative Union and the American Family Association for maintaining a conservative voting record.
