#7. Albuquerque

From low-cost bus fare to reduced fees for college classes and great health care, Albuquerque, NM, provides a host of services and amenities that help retirees maximize their budgets and stay active. According to our analysis of retirement destinations, Albuquerque is one of the healthiest cities in the country with a high number of medical facilities, lots of exercise options and affordable housing. Albuquerque’s dry climate, low cost of living and recreational facilities help make it one of the best places to retire. A large collection of gyms, golf courses and parks provide residents with plenty of places to exercise. Among the most dazzling views in Albuquerque are the Sandia Mountains at sunset. The mountains have several hiking trails and isolated vistas.

While the state does tax Social Security benefits, they can be included as part of an overall retirement-income exemption. New Mexico offers a property tax rebate for qualifying residents age 65 and older. The city allows residents 62 and older to ride the bus for just 35 cents, and maintains more than 400 miles of bike paths and trails. Residents 65 and older can take classes at the University of New Mexico for just $5 per credit hour. Six senior centers located throughout the city provide older adults with activities and social outlets for an annual membership of $13.
