#89. Buffalo, NY

Yes, it’s true that Buffalo often makes the news for getting dumped on by snowstorms. But this city in western New York on Lake Erie is so much more — it offers big-city amenities without many of the accompanying hassles like traffic or huge crowds. The city’s geographic location means it’s ripe with opportunity for job-seekers: not only is it near the Canadian border, but it’s also within 500 miles of 40 percent of the U.S. population. Industries with growing job numbers include finance, education and healthcare.

Top Industries and Employers: The region’s largest industries are healthcare, grocery/retail and finance and banking.

Best Coffee Shop: Undergrounds Coffee House and Roastery, located inside a renovated funeral parlor (yes, really) in Buffalo’s Old First Ward.

Best Local Beer/Brewery: Resurgence Brewing Company, for its roomy picnic table-style seating, outdoor fire pit and experimental beers.

Must-Have Meal: A big pile of crispy wings from Gabriel’s Gate, a Buffalo classic.

Best Co-Working Space: Dig Buffalo (which stands for design innovation garage), part of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

Best Meetup Spot (When Meeting Up Is a Thing Again): Big Ditch Brewing Company for a pint and fries with malt vinegar aioli or roasted garlic mayo.

Creative Hub: Buffalo Arts Studio, which not only offers workshops for children and adults who want to learn a new skill, but also offers professional development classes for artists in everything from marketing to intellectual property. There are studio artists and exhibitions as well.

Favorite Weekend Activity: In the summer, kayaking the Buffalo River with friends. In the winter, trying to stay warm by having a drink (or two!).

Free Way to Have Fun: Spend the day at one of the parks managed by the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy. The park system was designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted nearly 150 years ago and is a true Buffalo treasure.

Local Dream Job: Chocolatier, so you can make (and eat!) Buffalo’s famous sponge candy without anyone judging you.
