#40. Green Bay, WI

There’s no severing the tie between Green Bay and the Packers, but thanks to its strategic location on Green Bay and the Fox River, Green Bay is way more than just a football team. An important shipping hub, the city had the state’s largest job growth in recent years which has meant income growth in the region, as well. Low-key and a lot of fun, Green Bay is a small city with a big heart.

Top Industries and Employers: Shipping (by water and by ground) is still an important part of the economy here. Manufacturing, particularly in the paper industry, employs 20% of the county’s residents. Tourism and the Green Bay Packers are a big source of income and job opportunities here, as well.

Best Coffee Shop: Grounded Coffee has delicious drinks, low prices and they work with the Aging and Disability Resource Center to give people job training and life skills.

Best Local Beer/Brewery: Stillmank Brewing

Must-Have Meal: A butter burger at Kroll’s or prime rib at Wally’s Spot Supper Club

Best Co-Working Space: The Docking Station has two area locations and a number of different membership options for all kinds of co-working solutions.

Best Meetup Spot (When Meeting Up Is a Thing Again): Named one of the best undiscovered cocktail bars in America, The Libertine has a stellar Old Fashioned as well as a ton of other great craft cocktails and the best happy hour in the city.

Creative Hub: The Art Garage, located inside a 100-year-old former cannery, is home to galleries, artist studios and multipurpose spaces for classes, workshops, performances and more.

Favorite Weekend Activity: If it’s football season, the city all but shuts down during Packer games. Starting with training camp in the summer through to the playoffs, this city revolves around the Packers’ schedule.

Free Way to Have Fun: Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary is an urban wildlife refuge that’s part zoo, part state park. There are live animal exhibits and programs for kids as well as hiking trails. And it’s right next to Bay Beach Amusement Park, where there’s no entrance fee and all rides are $1 or less.

Local Dream Job: Anything to do with the Packers. This is a city where folks show up to make $12 an hour to help shovel out the stands at Lambeau Field to make it ready for winter home games. Head coach or maybe quarterback is of course the ultimate dream, but most Wisconsinites would happily take most any job associated with the team.
