#62. New Haven, CT

Did you know the first steamboat, hamburger, and wireless radio were developed in Greater New Haven? Suffice it to say, New Haven has a long tradition of innovation. Located between Boston and New York, New Haven is much more affordable than its big-city neighbors. Average monthly rent here is $1,560, nearly half of what’s charged in Boston. Home to Yale University and with a population of 130,000, it’s been said the city is “large enough to be interesting, yet small enough to be friendly.”

Top Industries and Employers: Healthcare and education are industry titans, with Yale University, Southern Connecticut University and local hospitals among New Haven’s biggest employers.

Best Coffee Shop: Serving fair-trade brews, Koffee, a local institution older than most college students, also has an in-house bakery. In the late afternoon it makes a transition and begins serving coffee cocktails, beer and wine.

Best Local Beer/Brewery: East Rock Brewing Company excels in German-style beers (and has a shuffleboard league).

Must-Have Meal: Louis’ Lunch is recognized by the Library of Congress as being the birthplace of the hamburger sandwich. You know what to do.

Best Co-Working Space: District. Lunch breaks are made even better because you’re right by a paddleboard and kayak lunch.

Best Meetup Spot (When Meeting Up Is a Thing Again): Hang out in the urban garden at 116 Crown; ask for the s’mores kit which comes with chartreuse marshmallows.

Creative Hub: The International Festival for Arts & Ideas is an annual gathering that showcases talent, with musicians, circus, theater, as well as engaging speakers.

Favorite Weekend Activity: Find your favorite pizza spot in Wooster Square, and save room for Italian pastries.

Free Way to Have Fun: Visit the Yale University Art Gallery.

Local Dream Job: Curator at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library
