#33. Newton, MA

Settled back in 1630, Newton offers residents a small-town atmosphere with the big-city advantages of living so close to Boston. This charming New England city is the home of Boston College, and has 13 distinctive villages and hundreds of historic homes.

Newton is famous for Heartbreak Hill and the late-race role it plays in the annual Boston Marathon. The city certainly has a lot of heart: residents here take pride in their community and like to volunteer for a variety of good causes. To celebrate the city each May, a month-long Newton Festival of the Arts provides live musical entertainment, literary events, films, theater productions, operas, art exhibitions and an Ethnic Heritage Festival.
