#52. State College, PA

Right in the geographic center of Pennsylvania is State College, a city surrounded by mountains and forests — and full of Penn State pride.

The economy here is largely dependent on Penn State University, which is also the city’s largest employer. The biggest events of the year occur each fall when more than 100,000 fans pack Beaver Stadium for Nittany Lions home football games (there’s a reason it made our list of the 10 Best Tailgate Cities), and the university district has multiple shops, restaurants and entertainment venues for students to enjoy year-round.

As for other quality-of-life features, healthcare ranks high in State College thanks to Mount Nittany Medical Center, and residents have many affordable housing options in a variety of eye-pleasing neighborhoods. Every July, the community hosts a five-day Arts Fest that draws more than 125,000 people.
