With the lure of high-paying jobs and beautiful weather, Silicon Valley is a popular place to live. Along with that popularity comes higher-than-average real estate prices and a tight supply of homes on the market. But prices have declined somewhat in recent years (the median price for a single-family home is around $500,000), and homes are available in many of the city’s charming, tree-lined neighborhoods.
Almaden Valley & Los Gatos
Two of the best, and most expensive, neighborhoods are Almaden Valley and the adjacent suburb of Los Gatos, tucked in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Many people who work in the area’s high-tech research and development companies, including IBM's Almaden Research Center, reside here. In additional to the beautiful scenery, residents are attracted to the many restaurants and boutique shops along the pedestrian-friendly streets. Residences range from century-old historic homes to modern-day mansions, priced from approximately $1 million to multi-million-dollar estates dotting the surrounding hillsides.
The Willow Glen neighborhood just south of downtown San Jose is known for its upper-end homes, perfect for middle-class families. This historic community (it dates to the 1860s) is ideally located only a short drive from the heart of downtown San Jose but far enough away to feel like a true suburban neighborhood. Average home prices here are about a third less than in Almaden Valley and Los Gatos. Like its upscale neighbors, Willow Glen offers a variety of restaurants and shops easily accessibly by foot. But the neighborhood also has a delightful tradition all its own. Every Christmas since the late 1950s, many residents place a fully decorated tree on their front lawn, and local businesses often display elaborate decorations.
East of downtown San Jose, the Evergreen neighborhood is a diverse area popular with the Hispanic and Asian communities. Mostly middle-class families live along the eastern edge of Evergreen; multi-million-dollar houses are found in the southern part of the neighborhood, near Silver Creek Valley Country Club and the adjacent neighborhood of San Felipe.
