In Walnut Creek, learning is serious business. $42 million serious. That’s how much money the city is ready to shell out for a new, state-of-the-art library downtown. The 42,000-square-foot library, for which construction broke ground May 19, is slated to be open by spring of 2010 and will include large reading areas, study rooms, a business and career resource center, a conference facility, a café and a bookshop. The new center of community education will provide a haven in which Walnut Creek’s younger learners can study. And study they do. Of the city school district’s six schools that are not alternative learning centers, five received the maximum rating of 10 from the educational resource www.greatschools.net. Buena Vista, Murwood and Parkmead Elementary Schools and Walnut Creek and Walnut Heights Intermediate Schools all received top kudos from the acclaimed Web site. After the studious tykes graduate from Walnut Creek’s K-12 education system, they don’t have to relocate for a college education. Diablo Valley College is part of the Contra Costa Community College District and operates a campus in Walnut Creek. DVC offers a wide array of academic and professional options, including programs in computer science, hotel and restaurant management and dental assisting. San Francisco-based Golden Gate University has maintained a Walnut Creek campus since 1985 and offers a Bachelor of Business Arts, a Bachelor of Arts in Management and a Master of Business Administration. The campus features seven classrooms including a computer lab and a business resource center. The educational landscape in Walnut Creek extends beyond the traditional, and is diverse and accessible to those of all ages and ambitions.
