Jacuzzis just before birth? That is just one of the interesting services and medical practices being utilized these days at Memorial Hospital North. The five-story hospital opened in April 2007 to help serve the northern sector of Colorado Springs, which is growing more and more in population every year. “About four years ago, we talked about moving into the northern part of the city, so we purchased 82 acres and built our second hospital,” says Joy Powell, vice president and administrator of Memorial Hospital North. As a result, Memorial North has joined the existing Memorial Hospital Central as part of an overall Memorial Health System in Colorado Springs. The Memorial Hospital Central campus also includes Memorial Hospital for Children on its grounds. “Regarding the new Memorial Hospital North, our main goal is to provide a comfortable healing setting that focuses not only on the body, but the mind and spirit as well,” Powell says. “That comfortable setting includes making all 88 rooms private, and we also provide families with waiting rooms that have fireplaces and other comforts.” Each private room features a view of the outdoors, and there are three meditation gardens on hospital grounds. In addition, there are no set visiting hours and family and friends can visit at their convenience, as well as according to the patients’ discretion and need for rest. “As the population of northern Colorado Springs continues to grow, our campus can expand to an eventual 500 beds as needed,” Powell says. The hospital has an emergency department‚ surgical facilities, outpatient services, a psychology department, full imaging diagnostics, and labor and delivery services. “Our birthing center area is indeed equipped with Jacuzzi tubs where mothers can relax during early labor, and we have found that this particular practice decreases the pain,” Powell says. “Mothers sometimes don’t even realize they are ready to deliver, and we simply get them out of the tub so they can labor and deliver in their private room.” Memorial North is also opening an intensive care unit during the first quarter of 2009 and opened an office building in 2008 that is specifically for doctors to have their private practices. “Yes, many northern Colorado Springs patients can visit their own doctor right here on our campus,” says Chris Valentine, public relations specialist at Memorial Hospital North. “In addition, this hospital includes a rehabilitation center, a sleep center and a gastro-neurology department.” Valentine also points out that all nurses stations throughout Memorial North are strategically located so that nurses are within a few steps of the private rooms they oversee. “An ambiance of serenity for patients along with family-friendly amenities is what our hospital is all about,” he says. “We offer a lot of medical services here, and keep adding more and more all the time.”
