Adams County is a good place for manufacturers.

Adams County is the pinnacle of opportunity. Situated in northeast Colorado, this region offers a lower cost of living; vast outdoor attractions, from parks and trails to wide-open spaces; and plenty of recreational options, like local eateries, great shops and fun community events. Plus, its sturdy economy makes it the perfect location for people to launch, relocate or grow their companies.

Tom Maddi is chairman and CEO of Epicurean Butter, a flavored butter manufacturer. With an eye on growth, the company chose to relocate its manufacturing facility in 2021, though it stayed in Adams County, moving from Federal Heights to Thornton.

What made Thornton the right place to relocate?

Timing is everything. We looked at several different places … between the Boulder-Superior corridor down to Denver. We had come to this particular site in January of 2020, and based on what the costs looked like, we were prepared to turn it down and move on, although we really loved this location. (The reduction in commercial real estate rates as a result of COVID) made it more palatable for us to afford this location.

How has expanding in the county allowed Epicurean Butter to continue to grow?

The facility is marvelous. The opportunity to expand the space has been great for our company, for our business. Overall, I think it’s better for our recruiting. It’s a much roomier place to work in. The location – the convergence of the two highways. I mean, ingress and egress are much easier for our suppliers.

What was the transition like for the company?

The City of Thornton has been very supportive – council members, the mayor and others who have been here for the grand opening.

Why would you recommend Adams County to others looking to launch or relocate a business?

Growth. Especially up this north part of Thornton. I just think it’s phenomenal the amount of business that is up here, the ability to grow, the ability to recruit. I’m not sure how much we do this, but I’m sure we’re probably sharing with the Amazon facility there on labor and that labor availability, as well as all the new business that is coming up this way. It’s exciting to be a part of that.

What are your future goals for Epicurean Butter?

We want to continue to grow. We are excited about both the opportunities in butter, but also in dairy products. You’ll see us advance this year into flavored cream cheese.
