Steve Craig had his eye on Florida as a retirement destination. As an avid fisherman, life on the water was a long-term goal. But it became reality sooner than Craig imagined when he expanded his high-tech interface welding business from California to Edgewater. Now, his company is growing. And Craig is enjoying sunsets over the water in his backyard.
“Team Volusia came to a trade show in California and said come and take a look,” says Craig, whose Carson, California, company specializes in bimetal fabrication, a process much in demand by the aerospace, commercial aviation and medical fields.
“My wife and I went there for a week and were so impressed by how nice people were,” says Craig, who cites the supportive and welcoming community, convenient location near the Space Coast and employee opportunities as contributing to his decision. “We just fell in love with the place.”
Craig’s story is becoming a familiar one, as more and more people discover the Southeast Volusia County area as a great place for business and an enviable quality of life.
“Technology, entrepreneurs and manufacturers are coming from everywhere,” says Bliss Jamison, president of the Southeast Volusia Manufacturing & Technology Coalition. “Our wonderful location between the beach and inlet makes it a great place to move to. Plus, there is lots of building going on and more coming out of the ground every day.”
As the local economy grows, the communities that make up Southeast Volusia — New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, Oak Hill, Osteen and Port Orange — are mindful of maintaining the legendary beaches, unique wildlife, recreational opportunities and culture that set the area apart.

“Our redeeming quality is our authenticity,” says Debbie Meihls, CEO of the New Smyrna Beach Area Visitors Bureau. “We’re among the few real coastal towns left in Florida. People feel they can get away and relax here. So, we want to make sure that whatever development comes, it is sustainable. People are committed to keeping things quaint and charming as we grow.”
