Automobiles, financial services and home improvement. Three very different industries yet all using the same business model.

JM Family Enterprises, while strongly rooted in the automotive sector, has diversified over the years, applying its successful strategies to other industries. Founded by Jim Moran in 1968 under the name Southeast Toyota Distributors, the company started as a private Toyota distributor serving Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Throughout the years, JM Family has been nimble and agile and, like its founder instilled in the company, preparing for the future. Changing, adapting and flexing — the company exceeded the needs of their customers and partners and continue to do so today.

“Our starting point is ‘how can we help our business partners be as profitable and successful as they can be?’” says Brent Burns, JM Family’s president and CEO. For example, it created JM&A Group, a finance and insurance business, to help dealers provide much-needed products to those customers who wanted additional protection or service contracts on their vehicles.

Also launched was Southeast Toyota Finance, the first captive auto finance company for an import manufacturer in the United States, which was developed to provide Toyota dealers in the region with financial support for their dealership services and attractive financing for customers.

From helping train dealer partners in the recruitment, hiring and retention of employees, to providing marketing assistance, incentive design and streamlining process flows, JM Family supplies each dealer/franchisee with the tools they need to thrive.

Realizing this approach could be replicated in other industries, JM Family took an even bigger leap in 2019, acquiring Home Franchise Concepts, one of the largest franchising systems in the home improvement goods and services space. Its franchise brands include Budget Blinds, Tailored Living featuring Premier Garage, Concrete Craft, AdvantaClean, Kitchen Tune-Up, Bath Tune-Up, Two Maids & A Mop and Aussie Pet Mobile.

“The link isn’t through the product. It’s through the distribution channel, (which is) the franchise network and our support of those franchisees and giving them the products, services, training, support and pay plans that allow them to be successful at what they are doing,” Burns says.

Looking forward, opportunities to further expand continue to grow for JM Family Enterprises.

“With more than 50 years of experience with our dealer franchise model, we are excited about the future and all we can do to help other companies be successful,” Burns concludes.
