Gainesville Raceway is a member of the National Hot Rod Association and is considered one of the fastest tracks in the circuit. After opening in 1969 the raceway soon became a hot spot for drag racers from across the state. Since the track held its first Gatornationals race in 1970 it has been the site of many speed records.
The Gainesville Raceway was the first to have a 260, 270 and 300 mph Top Fuel run.
In recent years the drag strip has been extended to 675 feet and repaved. Improvements also included the addition of a press box and upgrading the pit area with more space and new pavement.
Visitors can bring their own cars to participate in street legal drag races on Wednesday nights or Saturday afternoons. The races are $25 to enter and $5 to watch from the stands. People may also rent private drag strips for testing and racing. The raceway hosts several special events throughout the year such as the National Dragster Challenge and King of the Track race.
