With more than 7 miles of beaches, three golf courses, 20 parks, and shopping, dining and nightlife options, it is no wonder that Miami Beach is called “The World’s Playground.” Located on a narrow barrier island between downtown Miami and the Atlantic Ocean, Miami Beach sparks the senses with colorful art deco architecture, equally vivid designer fashions and a world-renowned restaurant scene.

Shopping

Miami Beach is filled with both big-name national stores and ultra-hip local boutiques, and most of the top destinations are walkable (though those bags can get heavy). Stroll along the distinct shopping streets of Collins Avenue, Ocean Drive, Espanola Way, Washington Avenue, Lincoln Road and the ever-popular 8th Street Designer District.

Dining

You are often literally sitting within sight of the ocean, so seafood is a natural choice in Miami Beach. But because the city has such heavy Caribbean, South American and European influences, the gastronomic choices abound. There are plenty of celebrity chefs in town, but also no shortage of smaller, quieter cafes and bistros. And, of course, there is always the venerable Joe’s Stone Crab, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013.

Attractions

Perhaps the most visually intriguing museum in Miami Beach is located outside. The Art Deco Historic District in the South Beach neighborhood is a kaleidoscopic collection of buildings from the 1920s and 1930s, notable for their vibrant colors and sharp angles. There are plenty of indoor art museums as well, plus the moving Holocaust Memorial. And for pure decadent fun, visit the luxurious Fontainebleau Hotel.

Festivals

Where to start? Art Basel (one of the largest contemporary art shows in the world), Miami Fashion Week, the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, the South Beach Comedy Festival, the Yacht and Brokerage Show (no mere boat show here), along with a myriad of food and music festivals. After all, it doesn’t take much to get people in Miami Beach to celebrate.
