Iowa City’s location in the middle of the American Heartland plus its college-town atmosphere with big-city cultural events gives locals plenty of fun things to do.

Landlocked Film Festival

Each year Iowa City is full of movie lovers and filmmakers for the Landlocked Film Festival. Thousands descend on the city’s downtown to watch the best in independent film from heart-warming family tales to honest documentaries.

Not only can spectators watch movies, but they can also learn more about how the film was made. Industry insiders and filmmakers hold presentations and workshops so the audience can get a behind-the-scenes look at making movies.

University of Iowa Sports

Iowa City wouldn’t be much of a college town without a die-hard sports environment, and, thankfully, the University of Iowa provides plenty for fans to enjoy. The Hawkeyes are part of the NCAA’s Division I-A and Big Ten Conference.

Football is a popular spectator sport, and the university’s Kinnick Stadium can seat more than 70,000 fans. Decked out in black and gold, the crowd loves to cheer on their team, especially versus rival Minnesota.

Devonian Fossil Gorge

Can you imagine Iowa under the ocean? According to scientists about 375 million years ago it was. South of the equator and covered by warm shallow seas, Iowa was once part of the seafloor. Today, locals and visitors can go to Iowa City’s Devonian Fossil Gorge and observe the remains of the sea life that once lived there.

Uncovered during a flood, the Devonian Fossil Gorge features 20 discovery points that allow visitors to learn more about what they are witnessing. The artifacts predate dinosaurs by about 200 million years, and visitors are encouraged to examine the remnants of another era.
