Situated next to Cedar Rapids is Marion, a pretty community with more than 40 parks and green spaces, and the city’s two public school districts are rated among the best in Iowa. Here are eight employers that are also key participants in the overall quality of life in Marion:
Providing avionics and information technology systems and services to government agencies and aircraft manufacturers is the specialty of Rockwell Collins, which produces advanced radio systems as well as display systems, flight controls, aircraft simulators and navigation systems.
St. Luke’s Hospital
In Cedar Rapids is St. Luke’s Hospital, whose 3,000 employees include numerous residents of Marion. The 532-bed medical facility has open-heart surgery capabilities, and St. Luke’s treat about 55,000 emergency department patients a year.
Mercy Medical Center
The 445-bed Mercy Medical Center is in Cedar Rapids, and many residents of Marion are among the hospital’s 2,300 employees. MMC offers services such as cardiology, orthopedics and pulmonology, and Mercy Medical is a Level III trauma center.
Marion Independent School District
Encompassing much of the south and east sides of Marion is the Marion Independent School District, home of the Indians. The five schools in the district are Emerson and Starry elementary schools, Francis Marion Intermediate, Vernon Middle and Marion High School.
Kirkwood Community College
More than 1,800 employees work for Kirkwood Community College at its nine campuses, including one in Marion. KCC offers 120 associate degree and certificate programs along with multiple continuing education programs for adults.
Linn-Mar Community School District
Serving Marion’s north, west and far-east sides is the Linn-Mar Community School District, one of the fastest growing school systems in the state of Iowa. The district serves more than 7,200 students at 10 individual schools.
Marion Parks and Recreation Department
Maintaining more than 600 acres of public ground with a combined total of 41 parks and green spaces is the Marion Parks and Recreation Department. The highlight attraction is Lowe Park that is a center for senior adult activities and features a newly dedicated Klopfenstein Amphitheater for the Performing Arts.
The Uptown Marion district (pictured above) offers a collection of businesses, events and activities that help keep everyone entertained. Attractions include several 19th century buildings along with more than 60 shops, restaurants and galleries, plus many residential options are available.
