West Des Moines is full of open spaces and plentiful park space. From biking to swimming to golf, there are plenty of things to do outside.
The West Des Moines parks department maintain more than 1,200 acres of parkland and open space. The city’s largest park is Raccoon River Park, which accounts for more than 600 of the city’s parks acreage.
There are also almost 50 miles of trails throughout West Des Moines for biking and walking.
West Des Moines is home to two aquatic centers. Valley View Aquatic Center caters to swimmers at any level. A 10-lane, 25-yard competition-style pool with diving board is next to a large leisure pool with spray features. Four water slides are next to 600 feet of lazy river, a meandering stream where swimmers can float.
Holiday Park Aquatic Center, like Valley View, is full of options for water lovers and thrill seekers. Water slides and swim lanes are next to family-friendly shallow areas.
Adult Sports Leagues
Even when school days are long gone, adults can still be on sports teams in West Des Moines. From basketball to football to kickball, locals can play like kids thanks to the city’s adult leagues.
The city of West Des Moines has about a half a dozen golf courses. Those looking to tee off can head to one of the city’s country clubs or privately owned greens.
