Boise residents have a lot of choices when it comes to their health. The medical community there comprises six hospitals, 750 physicians and more than 1,200 beds. Most people cast their vote for St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center, which won the Consumer Choice Award for Excellence, earning the designation of Idaho’s preferred hospital. St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center springs from humble beginnings as a six-bed frontier hospital in 1902. More than 100 years later, the hospital is Idaho’s largest health care provider and the flagship hospital of St. Luke’s Health System. The renowned hospital boasts centers of excellence in cancer, heart and women’s and children’s care, including serving as home to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital, the only children’s hospital in Idaho. In addition to its regional reputation of excellence, St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center is earning national attention. The hospital is among the Thomson Top Hospitals Top 100 list for 2008 and is designated a Magnet hospital for excellence in nursing care. Boise’s other major hospital is Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, an acute-care facility that features a regional trauma center. Saint Alphonsus is Boise’s oldest hospital, dating to 1894 when it was founded by the Sisters of the Holy Cross to provide care for the poor and underserved community. Today, the licensed 381-bed facility and the Saint Alphonsus Medical Group’s 70 physicians treat Idaho families throughout the Treasure Valley. The hospital also offers a Virtual Monitoring & Care program for patients who are homebound or do not have access to a hospital. Doctors use audio and/or visual means to remotely assess, monitor, instruct, educate and treat patients. Other hospitals in Boise are Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Hospital, The Veterans Administration Medical Center, the University of Washington School of Medicine’s teaching hospital and the Treasure Valley Hospital.
