Created with the entire community in mind, the Portneuf Wellness Complex opened on September 12, 2015. Covering 80 acres, the $15 million complex was fully funded by the Portneuf Health Trust, which is an owner of the Pocatello-Chubbuck area’s largest health-care provider, Portneuf Medical Center.

“We decided to create an activity-based complex that would allow people to be as active and have as much fun as possible, and meet as many purposes as it possibly could,” says Shaun Menchaca, president and CEO of the Portneuf Heath Trust. “We also wanted to make it for all abilities, all ages and all economic levels. We really wanted this to be something special, world-class and available to everybody in our community.”

Recreational Amenities and Opportunities

Adjacent to the Bannock County Event Complex, the Portneuf Wellness Complex includes seven multi-use athletic fields, four sand volleyball courts, two basketball courts and a multi-use championship field. The complex also features a CrossFit for Kids playground, where children of all ages conquer challenging, fun obstacles.

“Every day that I’ve driven into the complex, the CrossFit for Kids playground has been completely full,” Menchaca says. “It’s definitely been a success so far, and kids seem to really love it.”

The complex has a nearly 7-acre lake stocked with salmon and trout and complete with a beach and docks, making it ideal for swimming and fishing. Runners and walkers can take advantage of the facility’s looped paths, while biking enthusiasts can hit trails designed for BMX and mountain biking and hone their technique in a separate skills area.

Portneuf Health Trust Amphitheatre

The Portneuf Wellness Complex also includes the Portneuf Health Trust Amphitheatre, which seats up to 11,000 people and is the largest facility of its kind in the state. Open during warm weather months, the venue is already drawing popular acts, such as Styx, the Beach Boys and the Australian Pink Floyd.

“People are really enjoying the concerts,” Menchaca says. “The shows are produced by a company from Salt Lake City called United Concerts who not only book the acts but also take care of parking control, security ushers and concessions. They’re bringing really great concerts and shows to our community.”

In addition to entertaining audiences, the amphitheatre offers spectacular views of nearby mountains and the complex’s lake, thanks to its unique, open design.

Bingham Memorial Hospital

Also addressing the healthcare needs of residents in the region is Bingham Memorial Hospital, which has 500 employees. BMH sees about 8,000 emergency room patients each year, and physicians perform approximately 2,500 surgical procedures. The hospital in Blackfoot offers many medical services, and BMH in 2015 became the first hospital in Idaho to use a new minimally invasive catheter procedure called Orbital Atherectomy System. OAS treats high-risk coronary artery disease patients by sanding away plaque while preserving healthy blood vessel tissue, resulting in no damage to the artery.
