Saint Anthony Medical Center and Franciscan Point Outpatient Care Center are just what the doctor ordered for residents of Crown Point and beyond. Saint Anthony's is a 245-bed hospital that was established in 1974. The hospital then opened its Franciscan Point outpatient facility in 2008. Here is some information about both:

Saint Anthony Medical Center

The center on South Main Street has 1,450 employees and is part of the Sisters of Saint Francis, a 14-hospital system based in Indiana. Saint Anthony offers several advanced, non-invasive procedures, including new-generation MRI technology to better diagnose problems with the brain, spine, skeleton, chest, abdomen, pelvis and blood vessels.

“Since 1974, Saint Anthony has witnessed major advances in medicine, technology and treatment procedures,” says David F. Ruskowski, president.

Recent Advancements

They include the acquisition of an all-digital cardiovascular imaging system in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, while a mobile positron emission tomography, or PET, scan system now offers early and highly accurate detection in the fields of cardiology‚ neurology and oncology. For women‚ The Breast Care Center at Saint Anthony has a homelike atmosphere‚ while offering revolutionary computer-aided mammogram screening technology that improves detection rates by as much as 20 percent.

Other Important Services

They include a Burrell Cancer Institute, behavioral medicine, Center for Incontinence, diabetes care, Sleep Disorders Clinic and a Wound Care Center. There has also been a dramatic increase in the number of babies delivered at Saint Anthony in recent years, which points to a noticeable influx of young families to the area.

Franciscan Point Outpatient Care Center

This center on U.S. 231 just off Interstate 65 complements Saint Anthony's, especially since less serious medical problems can be addressed by Franciscan Point’s EXPRESSCare. Ailments that can be treated there include colds, the flu, sprains and sports injuries, and no appointments are needed.

EXPRESSCare is open from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and most insurance plans are accepted. Specialists are also on staff in the areas of physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as family medicine, internal medicine and orthopedics.

Sports Medicine Institute

Franciscan Point is also home to a Sports Medicine Institute, which seeks to help physically active people improve their performance, as well as treat and prevent injuries. Specialists there have already worked with Olympians and professional athletes, as well as junior-high through college-level players.

“With all the equipment and devices and our staff, Sports Medicine Institute is a second-to-none, athletic-development medicine program, incomparable in northwest Indiana and suburban Chicago,” Ruskowski says.
