Hospitals, universities head an impressive list.

Indiana is graced with beautiful scenery and many natural sanctuaries, including the Kesling Wetland near Wolf Lake (pictured above). The Hoosier State also has a strong economy led by its agriculture, education, health care, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and retail sectors. With that in mind, here are the 10 top employers in the state.

1. Life Time Fitness, Indianapolis

With franchise facilities throughout the U.S., Healthy Way of Life Company owns Life Time Fitness, which offers sports, fitness, recreation and spa experiences to its customers. Besides workout equipment, each center includes dance classes, a tumbling studio, swimming pools and a full-service salon and spa.

2. Indiana University Health Center, Bloomington

Specializing in care for its college-aged patients, the four-story Indiana University Health Center provides everything from nutrition counseling to birth control advice to IU students. Academic counselors are on site, and so are physical therapists for students recovering from injuries.

3. Phoenix Services, Portage

Steel-producing manufacturers around the globe are customers of Phoenix Services, which offers customized scrap handling and processing, scrap upgrading, furnace refractory tear-outs, tap-hole drilling and mobile equipment rental. The company oversees many of its own processing plants throughout the U.S.

4. Purdue University, West Lafayette

More than 200 majors for undergraduates and 70 master’s and doctoral programs are offered at Purdue University, which also has 18 intercollegiate sports teams and 900 student organizations. About 40,000 students attend Purdue, and there are more than 3,000 academic employees.

5. St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital, Indianapolis

Nearly 3,000 people work at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital, which has a number of award-winning centers of excellence. They include St. Vincent Cancer Care, St. Vincent Heart Center, St. Vincent Neuroscience Institute, St. Vincent Orthopedic Center and St. Vincent Spine Center.

6. Delphi Electronics & Safety, Kokomo

Producing high-performance safety features for the vehicle market is the specialty at Delphi Electronics & Safety, where expertise extends from crash sensing electronics to collision mitigation. Workers develop and manufacture products related to areas such as body and security, electrical architecture, infotainment and powertrain systems.

7. Indiana University, Bloomington

More than 42,000 students are enrolled at Indiana University Bloomington, including 32,000 undergrads and 10,000 postgraduates. IU has an academic staff of 2,150, and the university features 24 varsity athletics teams – including its famed men’s basketball program. There are 650 student organizations on campus.

8. Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, Indianapolis

Open since 2003, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital includes more than 50 pediatric specialists and subspecialists on staff, along with experienced pediatric nurses, social workers, chaplains and allied health professionals. Patients range from newborns to teens, and there are more than 150 private inpatient beds.

9. Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis

Commonly known as IUPUI, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis belongs to the university systems of both Indiana University and Purdue University, and it sits upon a peninsula adjacent to downtown Indianapolis. IUPUI offers about 200 degree programs and the Indiana University School of Dentistry, which is the only dental school in the state.

10. Eli Lilly & Company, Indianapolis

Eli Lilly & Company is a global pharmaceutical company whose products are sold in about 125 countries. The company, which was founded in 1876 by Civil War veteran Col. Eli Lilly, was the first to mass-produce penicillin, the Salk polio vaccine and insulin.
