The medical community in Topeka is continually evolving and improving, leaving area residents in good hands for their health care needs. The city’s two general hospitals have both been in the area for decades and have grown with the city.

Stormont-Vail HealthCare

Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, part of an integrated health care system in Topeka, is the larger of the two hospitals with 586 beds. The hospital was recently named one of the nation's top 50 hospitals for cardiovascular care by Truven Health Analytics. Stormont-Vail began as a four-story hospital, born of a merger between Christ’s Hospital, founded in 1884, and the Jane C. Stormont Hospital and Training School for Nurses, established a decade later. Today, the hospital is an acute care referral center for Northeast Kansas, offering specialties ranging from older adult care to specialized infant care. Stormont-Vail operates the only Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the county. Stormont-Vail recently completed a new $35 million surgical center. The hospital also offers 24-hour lab services and a 24-hour pharmacy.

St. Francis Health Center

St. Francis Health Center is the oldest hospital in the city. When the facility opened its doors Oct. 17, 1909, it offered just 40 beds. Today, St. Francis has 378 beds and a wide variety of specialties, including cancer care, heart disease and rehabilitation. Since its earliest days, St. Francis has been on the pioneering edge of medical technology. The hospital was the first in the area to purchase an X-ray machine, establish an intensive care unit, install diagnostic ultrasound equipment and conduct a heart transplant. St. Francis is also the only hospital in the Topeka with a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner used in caring for cancer. In the spring of 2015, St. Francis became the first hospital in the state to deploy a germ-killing robot to disinfect its facility.

Topeka is also home to five specialized hospitals of various disciplines from veterans’ care to outpatient surgery and nearly 40 retirement and adult care homes. Whatever their health care needs, residents of Topeka will find precisely the care they need at one of the city’s first rate medical centers or specialty providers.
