Glasgow residents have access to some of the best outdoor recreation options in the country, including a state park with the world’s largest cave system. From resorts and exceptional camping facilities to a sports scene that includes an invitation-only U.S. Tennis Association sanctioned tournament, Glasgow loves to play outdoors.

Resorts

Barren River Lake State Resort Park

Get to know the Bluegrass state in an up-close and personal way at this family-friendly state park. Your family can stay in cabins or the grand lodge overlooking the 10,000-acre lake, or splurge on your own surprisingly affordable villa. When you’re not enjoying the comfortable accommodations, you’ll be outside golfing, boating, hiking and fishing.

The Park Mammoth Resort is way more than just a place to crash after a long day at Mammoth Cave. Located just five minutes from Cave City, Park Mammoth Resort has tons of recreation options for your whole family. There are 18 holes of golf, a fantastic lodge and restaurant that includes a wine-tasting room, and even a shooting center.

Sports Parks

For those who need a little more action in their outdoor time, there are plenty of sporting options. There’s Beaver Trail Park, Weldon Park, American Legion Park and Twyman Park to start with, all managed by Glasgow Parks and Recreation Department. If you’re looking for a place to get your soccer on try the well-maintained soccer fields at Glasgow-Barren Soccer Complex. Find what each location has to offer by checking out the Parks and Rec department’s website.

Gorin Park is one park option. Every year it hosts the Weldon Tennis Tournament, a tournament for both local and out-of-town players. Only invited players can play in the tournament, making this one of the most prestigious cups to win in the region.

Exercise Facility

Area residents looking to pump up and sweat it out will find the Barren County Family YMCA just the place. They offer aquatic programs, youth sports and workout facilities, all in a positive, uplifting environment.

Golf

The region has become quite the hotbed for golf. Several local high school golfers have been crowned Mr. or Ms. Golf, distinguishing them among the best golfers in the state. The facilities at the Glasgow Golf and Country Club host many of the area’s school players.

For extra-curricular and grown-up players, Fox Hollow Golf, Diamond Caverns Golf Course, Cave Valley Golf Club at Park Mammoth Resort all offer excellent facilities, and Barren River Lake State Park also has an outstanding reputation for its 18-hole golf course.

Caves

What really puts this part of Kentucky on the outdoorsman’s map is its world-famous collection of caves. A national park since 1941, Mammoth Cave National Park features the world’s longest cave system with 400 miles of surveyed passageways. The cave has a new visitors center and countless ways to appreciate the beauty and mystery of a whole world underground.

Adjacent to Mammoth Cave is Diamond Caverns, giving spelunkers and ordinary sightseers alike another viable option for all things underground. The smaller cave has been featured in tours for more than 150 years, aweing visitors with its naturally cascading calcite deposits.
