The nation's 11th-busiest port, the Port of Lake Charles is a big player in the local economy.
Opened in 1924, the port today supports 10,000 direct and indirect jobs. About 5 million tons of cargo is loaded and unloaded yearly at the two Port of Lake Charles terminals. Crude oil is the port's top commodity; other commodities include limestone, gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and caustic soda. Bagged food, used to aid the world, is one of the port's major exports.
