Charles County students have access to excellent public and private schools, most equipped with the latest in educational technology to keep students ahead of the curve as they prepare for careers.
Charles County Public Schools
Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is one of the fastest growing school systems in Maryland, with approximately 26,500 students enrolled for the 2013-14 school year. The district has 39 schools and education centers, including 21 elementary schools. A seventh high school – St. Charles, off Piney Church Road in Waldorf – is under construction and expected to open in August 2014. CCPS employs nearly 3,500 people, including 2,000 teachers.
Top Notch Technology
CCPS has a well-deserved reputation for using technology to enhance instruction. District schools offer wireless Internet access, while the advancement of a rigorous science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program is designed to build character, teach leadership skills and prepare students for careers in those valued disciplines.
For example, North Point High School for Science, Technology and Industry offers college preparatory and advanced placement courses, as well as four STI programs, which are organized into distinct schools: the School of Advanced Technology and Engineering; the School of Technology; the School of Construction Development; and the School of Health, Human and Protective Services. The academically challenging offerings explain, in part, why the University of Maryland A. James Clark School of Engineering has selected North Point as one its top 25 engineering source schools.
A diverse array of private schools give Charles County parents and students additional options. In Bryantown, St. Mary’s School provides a Catholic education to students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Waldorf is home to Grace Christian Academy of Maryland, which boasts a 17-acre campus that accommodates 400 students from preschool through grade 12. White Plains offers Southern Maryland Christian Academy, which aims to create an environment that inspires academic excellence and a lifelong commitment to Christ. In La Plata, High Road School of Southern Maryland serves students facing learning, language and social challenges.
